In the United States as well as most countries world wide, fossil fuels are used to meet the majority of energy needs. So what are fossil fuels? Simply, coal, oil (or petroleum), and natural gas. These sources of energy are referred to as “fossil” fuels due to the fact that they were created over millions of years from the organic remains of prehistoric animals and plants. Before the age of the dinosaurs, the earth was covered with swampy lands filled with trees. As the trees died and fell into the swamps, they began to be covered with layers of sand and clay. This created sedimentary rock which increasingly layered over the decaying plant life. As it layered, the rock squeezed out the water from the decay, leaving what we consider fossil fuels.

Considering the creation process of these fossil fuels, it is understandable why they are considered “non-renewable” sources of energy. It would take longer than humanity has existed for these fuels to be created again. So unless, humanity wants to wait around for millions of years, for more coal, oil, or natural gas, we must address the problem of our energy resources.

It is reported that the world has doubled its use of fossil fuels every 20 years dating back to the first of the 20^th century. This means that we are using up the reserves of fuels available at an increasing rate. It is necessary for the safety of the environment to start looking for other renewable sources of energy.

As ice caps shrink, the sunlight they normally reflect into space is absorbed by land and water. This causes global temperatures to rise, which result in more ice melting. As sea ice and glaciers melt, the ocean becomes more acidic and less hospitable to life. It also has caused an increase in greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane.

Another impact of glacial melting is sea level rise. This melting causes freshwater to become contaminated, beaches to erode and also result in more floods. Islands and cities at sea level, like Miami or Shanghai, are at greatest risk due to sea level rise. A mere 3-feet of sea rise would cause more than 20,000 of land on America’s Gulf Coast to be underwater.

Ecosystems and native Arctic communities are feeling the impact of glacial melting. Animals like polar bears and seals rely on the ice to reproduce and feed. The loss of sea ice has resulted in a decline in numbers of these native Arctic species. As ice continues to melt, trees would absorb sunlight and this would further increase global warming in the Arctic region. When frozen ground melts, villages may flood. As animals like seals decrease in number, native peoples run out of a food source for which they have long been dependent.

Solar power comes in three forms. One form sends the sun to one place when it’s cool and another when it’s hot. Another takes the sun’s heat and uses it to heat water or air. The third type, takes sunlight and turn it into electricity. Houses can be solar-powered with various devices, including pumps, panels, or heaters.

Wind turbines convert wind energy into electricity. If you use a wind turbine, your power comes straight from the turbine. An exception would be that you’ll need to get some power from your local utility during times when the wind speed is slow.

Water can be turned into electricity for home use by installing a microhydropower system. These systems can be used by homeowners who have a source of water on their land, such as a stream. If you don’t have access to flowing water and live in the Northeastern United States, it’s possible for you to get electricity from a hydropower plant instead. The Amazon River is the world’s second-longest river, and the largest in terms of volume. Research demonstrates that global warming is being directly impacted by the increased amounts of carbon dioxide and methane gases released into the atmosphere from areas such as the Amazon. This increase in greenhouse gases is connected to the loss of soil and plants that normally serve to remove greenhouse from the atmosphere. It is possible that by the year 2050, the Amazon will be a primary contributor of greenhouse gases, instead of a primary source for removing the gases from the atmosphere.

It’s estimated that one-third of fossil fuels used in the United States are used for animal agriculture. Large amounts of energy are consumed in order to produce the crops that are used to feed farm animals. Once those animals are slaughtered, more fossil fuels are used in the gas that powers the refrigerated trucks which cross the country, bringing meat to processing plants and supermarkets.

Up to 90 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions are generated annually by livestock production. These emissions have negative impacts on the environment as a whole. By eating less meat, you help reduce carbon dioxide emissions and conserve fossil fuels.

This doesn’t necessarily mean you have to give up meat altogether. While vegetarianism is a viable lifestyle choice for some, others feel that they have to have the occasional burger or that order of buffalo wings. If that’s the case for you, simply try cutting back. The “Meatless Monday” movement advocates following a vegetarian or vegan diet for just one day out of the week. Cutting out meat for one day per week has big environmental benefits–not only does it save fossil fuels, it preserves precious water resources and can reduce your overall carbon footprint.

If you do eat meat, then think about where it comes from. While it may cost a little more to order organic, grass-fed meat, it is believed to be healthier, and according to many, better tasting because the meat is free of antibiotics and hormones. Organic beef, chicken, pork, lamb and even bison are produced by farmers who follow sustainable practices that protect the land and their herds.

You can also buy fruits and veggies that are organically grown, and locally sourced. Buying locally grown produce helps reduce fossil fuel usage.

Reduce Waste – It isn’t that difficult to reduce the amount of material you use. Check out garage, estate and consignment sales for used electronics, clothes and furniture. Reusable microfiber rags are ideal for cleaning. Read your favorite newspapers and magazines online and get your name taken off of mailing lists so that you don’t receive junk mail.

Reuse It – Buy rechargeable batteries. Donate those old cell phones or eyeglasses to organizations that will repurpose them for people in need. Tote your own reusable bags to the supermarket instead of using the plastic ones offered in the store.

Recycle – You can recycle items made of aluminum, glass, plastic and paper. This is a prime way to reduce your carbon footprint. Consider that it takes about 4,000 years for a glass bottle to decompose, and that 50 percent of the trash in landfills is paper. This glass and paper, if properly recycled can be used to make new bottles or paper goods.

Energy Savings – Unplug appliances when not in use. Switch on the “sleep” and “hibernate” settings on your computer, which use less energy, when you are not using the computer. Check your thermostat: ideally, it should be set to 68 degrees in winter and 78 degrees in summer.

Conserve and Protect Water – Simply placing a toilet dam in your toilet tank can save about 13,000 gallons of water annually for a family of four. Don’t rinse unused cleaning products and paint down drains because they can end up in the water supply. Instead, your local sanitation department can tell you where to safely dispose of these products. And don’t forget to turn off the water while you’re brushing your teeth!

-One easy way to save green at the office by going green is to swap out incandescent light bulbs for compact fluorescent bulbs, or CFLs. CFLs use 25 percent less energy than traditional bulbs, which in turn reduces your energy bills.

-Small and commercial businesses can benefit from buying green power. This means getting electricity from independent companies that generate power from clean sources as to opposed to fossil fuels.

-Need company vehicles? Consider buying hybrid vehicles or ones powered by alternative fuels, such as biodiesel.

-Provide an incentive for employees who use mass transit to get to and from work. Some cities offer commuter benefit programs that allow employees at participating companies to set aside up to $230 per month pre-tax to pay for transit expenses. As an employer you’ll save on payroll taxes by offering this benefit to your staff.

-If you are building a new workspace or remodeling an existing one, install water-efficient water fixtures and toilets in restrooms.

-Equip your office with ENERGY STAR certified printers, computers, copiers and fax machines. Products with the ENERGY STAR rating use half the electricity of traditional electronics.

-Purchase recycled paper for your office; look for products that have a high post-consumer waste content. That is, ones that have a high ratio of recycled material as opposed to tree fibers.

Nearly one-third of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States are caused by transportation. Transportation is a leading producer of carbon dioxide gas, which is the primary greenhouse gas released into Earth’s atmosphere. To reduce emissions of greenhouse gas in the transportation sector, alternative fuels and hybrid vehicle technologies are being increasingly utilized. Individuals can help reduce these emissions by walking more and using mass transit systems–some of which are switching to alternative fuel sources.

Farming is responsible for about one-fifth of greenhouse emissions globally. In the U.S., the figure is around 8 percent. In the farming industry, methane and nitrous oxide–not carbon dioxide–are the greenhouse gases being produced. Some studies suggest that although there is less methane and nitrous oxide in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide, the former gases may be more harmful to the atmosphere. Research has indicated that methane and nitrous oxide are up to 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide gas. To offset the effects of greenhouse gases produced by agriculture, consumers can support farms that use organic practices and buy locally-sourced produce, dairy products and meats.

Energy production is a primary source of greenhouse gas emissions. Coal-burning power plants produce more than 2 million tons of carbon dioxide annually in the U.S., alone. Implementing clean energy technologies such as solar, wind and water can help reduce the pollution produced by coal-burning power plants. Clean energy technologies can also be used at home — think solar panels or a home wind turbine — to help reduce the dependence on energy produced by coal.

Carbon offset credits help support projects such as wind farms and capturing gas from landfills and factory farms.

Individuals, families, and businesses can calculate their annual carbon footprint and then purchase the amount of offset credits that will neutralize their carbon emissions by funding clean energy projects. You can purchase offset credits that neutralize the amount of carbon emissions generated by a year of flying, a year of driving, or a year of home energy use. You can also buy credits that equal the amount of emissions generated by the average individual or family in one year.

If you are a frequent flier, some airlines will offer you the option of buying carbon offset credits based on the amount of miles you will be flying on an upcoming trip.

If you are interested in purchasing carbon offset credits, organizations such as the Environmental Defense Fund provide links to companies that sell carbon offsets. These links are verified so that consumers know they are purchasing from a legitimate business. For example, you can purchase carbon offsets from landfills that are capturing and destroying harmful methane gas or from a company that hooks long-haul trucks to the power grid so they don’t waste gas when they are idling during break periods.

Carbon offsets help corporations by making them identify areas in which they are producing high amount of carbon emissions. They can then look for ways to reduce those emissions as part of an overall climate plan for the business.

1. Use green cleaning products. Green cleaning products are made from renewable sources and are non-toxic and biodegradable. If you want to clean green and save money, make your own cleaning products. A solution of vinegar and baking soda mixed with warm water will safely clean most surfaces in your home.

2. Opening windows is an important part of green cleaning. Fresh air sweeps toxins out of your home, improving air quality in your house.

3. Be wary of antibacterial cleaners. While they’ve become all the rage in recent years, antibacterial cleaners may have the unwanted effect of causing “super-strains” of resistant bacteria to emerge. Studies indicate that antibacterial soaps don’t work any better than good old soap & water.

4. Look for natural ways to make your home smell good. Instead of buying cans of air freshening sprays, use natural herbs such as cloves or cinnamon, boiled in water. Houseplants are way to add fragrance and filter the air in your house.

5. Don’t walk around the house in your shoes. Shoes are a main way that pollutants and allergens such as antifreeze and pollen are brought indoors. Use that doormat before entering your home and take your shoes off as soon as your are inside.

6. If you don’t have time to clean your home, employ the services of green house cleaners. These companies can clean your home on a schedule that you indicate and use
eco-friendly products to get the job done.

7. Cut up old t-shirts and towels and reuse them for house cleaning. The rags can be tossed into the washing machine for cleanup; this saves on using papertowels.

So how does solar energy work in a practical world setting? As the battle continues to stop wasting fossil fuels and to turn to alternate and renewable forms of energy there is the growing talk of solar energy and solar power as a ways to generate electricity, but the question remains for most people: does it really work? The answer is yes. It works in a variety of ways and settings. Like take the agriculture industry. They seek to get as much solar energy as they can because the more sunlight the plants have the more productive they will be.

So how do they maximize the sunlight to the plants? They do it in a variety of ways. One is the timed cycle where they plant and there is the way they position a row of plants toward the sun. They also stagger the heights of the rows so that plants all get a change to get the sunlight they need. When there have been periods in time where there was little light seasons they used growing walls which acted as thermal walls and accelerated the ripening process.

But the use of solar energy isn’t just limited to growing crops. There is also the use of solar power for pumping water, drying crops, brooding chicks and drying chicken manure. And at wineries all over the country they are using the energy generated by panels to power the presses for the grapes. Greenhouses work much the same way to keep heat in so that all year round the plants can be productive. Of course other industries are learning exactly what the farmers have known for years: that the use of solar power is one of the strongest, cheapest, and most effective ways to generate power.

So where does this leave solar power heading into the future? It will be one of the best ways to generate electricity for homes and as technology advances so will our dependency for the sun in our everyday lives going forward.

Climate change has definite effects on the Earth and its human and animal inhabitants. The effects of climate change are already being felt and will worsen if people do not reduce the amount of pollution they place into the atmosphere.

One way in which climate change is felt is in rising temperatures. Heat waves are becoming more common, are lasting longer, and can result in fatalities to humans and animals. Warmer weather could also result in more and stronger hurricanes that would threaten coastal cities like Miami, Florida. Hot, dry weather has caused more wildfires in locations like California and the rise in temperatures also means more flooding.

A related effect of rising temperatures is human health problems. As temperatures rise, disease-carrying insects such as mosquitoes breed in greater numbers, threatening people with outbreaks of conditions such as malaria. Heat also makes air quality worse–and when that happens, there tends to be an upswing in respiratory conditions like asthma. The hot weather also exacerbates allergies for millions of sufferers.

Climate change is causing glaciers to melt and seas to rise. Rises in sea levels worldwide increases the risk of flooding in coastal areas. It also raises the possibility of ocean water seeping into freshwater areas. Sea level rise can be attributed to glacial melting.

As global temperatures continue to rise, ecosystems and species are placed in danger of extinction. For example, glacial melting threatens the existence of the polar bear. Warmer temperatures threaten to wipe out coral reefs in places like Australia. Rising temperatures also put the New England sugar maple at risk–the sugaring seasons are shorter than normal because of higher temperatures.

If you’re serious about going green, your plate is a great place to start. Buy organic produce and organically produced meats as much as possible. If you decide to eliminate meat from your diet, you’ll be doing your body–and the planet–a favor. If becoming a vegetarian isn’t an option, then try going meat-free one day a week. If you buy seafood, look for wild-caught fish and choose seafood that is lower on the food chain, like squid, mussels and oysters, that contain less mercury. When purchasing canned goods, be aware that many aluminum cans contain a harmful chemical known as BPA. You can buy canned goods from companies such as Heinz which are implementing BPA-free linings for their aluminum cans. Alternatively, buy fresh or frozen vegetables to avoid cans altogether and reduce your soda intake.

Around the house, there are many ways for someone new to green living to reduce waste and save energy and water. In the kitchen you can keep a simple composting unit on your countertop to turn scraps into nutrient rich food for your flowers. Recycling is important — keep bins in your home to separate used plastic, paper and cans. When it comes to energy savings, the easiest thing to do is turn off the lights when leaving a room. It’s also a great idea to switch to compact fluorescent light bulbs, which use far less energy than traditional bulbs. And instead of using gas to do all your shopping, you can shop online for everything from household goods to designer jewelry and have it delivered instead of driving around everywhere.  If you are in the market for new appliances, look for ones that are ENERGY STAR rated, they are more efficient and will lower your utility bills. To conserve precious water, swap out regular showerheads for low-flow showerheads. Low-flow toilets can save you up to $100 per year on your water bill.

I’m so grateful that I’m able to have a good computer in our home. Not only is it fun for me, but I know that as my children get older it will give them a big advantage in school. It will be great for them to do their research on. Of course, they don’t use it for that yet, but I know they will some day.

I was talking to a friend who has kids that are a little older than mine, and she says that they are pretty rough on the computer. Even when they go on kids’ sites they end up downloading stuff that they shouldn’t, and they don’t really pay attention to the prompts, so the computer gets filled with all sorts of programs that she doesn’t want on there. I asked around and other parents have had the same experience. Apparently it can make your computer run slowly. I definitely don’t want that. However, when I was asking around, one of the other moms told me that if you keep your computer up to date, it isn’t so much of a problem.

When I went online to find out more about it I realized that it’s just a matter of updating the drivers on a regular basis. Of course, I didn’t really understand what that meant at first, but basically drivers are just the components that the computer uses to communicate with programs and software.  While I was looking around, I found out that a driver update from a good program will manage all of your updating needs. Sounds perfect for me!  I can just run it in the background and it will make sure that everything is taken care of.

We hear the world solar power a lot but there is another word that you hear just as often that is easily confused with solar power, and that word is solar energy. Solar Power is the use of the suns energy to convert it into electricity. This is considered a growing source of alternative power for companies, cities and homes all over the world but what is solar energy and how does it matter to you?

Solar energy is radiant light and heat directly from the sun. It has been used by human beings since the dawn of man. Solar radiation along with the various other forms of energy such as wind and wave power are responsible for most of the renewable energy on earth. There is a fraction(albeit a small fraction) of solar energy used meaning we could be using the sun to power things far more than is currently done.

Solar powered generation for electricity relies on heat engine and photovoltaics. The sun can be used for everything it’s only our lack of imagination that is stopping it. The solar applications that are used today includes space heating and cooling through architecture, portable water via distillation and disinfection, daylighting, solar hot water, and solar cooking, and high temperature process heat for industrial purposes. The best way to use solar energy is through solar panels.

There are two solar technologies: either passive or active solar. The difference has everything to do with the way the capture and distribute solar energy. The active technique includes photovoltaic panels or solar thermal collectors that harness the energy. The passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun and selecting materials with light dispersing properties. This can also include making spaces that naturally circulate air.

The land and oceans absorb solar radiation that raises their temperature. This would explain why the water gets warmer over the summer time. Things like this are a good reason why so many people are pushing for solar energy but solar energy does more than you think.

In these uncertain economic times many homeowners have had to take a hard look at their Finances and do their best to come up to a solution to their climbing debts. Many of them have had no choice but to leave their house and move in with a relative in order to save some money. Others are holding on and trying to come up with a plain to consolidate their debts. It is a confusing time for them because they do not know who to trust and have heard so many horror stories about being tricked out of money by the very people who were supposed t be helping to find a solution.

The first thing that they will try to do is to refinance their home. This could be a good solution providing that there is enough equity in the home. The chances are that they have a high interest mortgage and if they can get this lowered even a few points, it could give an increased  savings over the years. The Finances of the home owner have to be solid. They will request a copy of your taxes for the last two years and proof of current employment.

There are also fees involved when you refinance. It is a good suggestion to shop around for this as well. Just because you already have a mortgage with one company, it doesn’t mean that they will necessarily give you the best terms this time. In fact, they would prefer you maintaining the present payments. They may try to charge you higher closing fees as a result in order to make up some of the cash flow that they will be missing. In short, look around and compare the terms before taking action.

It can be considered ironic that most people don’t question their use of fossil fuels until times of great crisis. This was seen during the major fuel shortages in the 1970s; it was seen after the Exxon Valdez oil spill off the coast of Alaska; and more recently, after the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig. But like clockwork, as time passes after each disaster, people start returning to their previous levels of fossil fuels, leaving future dangers unabated.

Not only the ecological messes, but the legal messes as well, that follow these disasters leave many consumers dreaming of taking out 21st century insurance towards future incidents. Unfortunately, that isn’t possible, but the practice of conservation can replicate some of the advantages of being insured. How conservation affects such things as demand and operations will lead to results in how extensive fossil fuel accidents are and how fast they are cleaned up.

By conserving more fossil fuels, there will be a drop in production. This means much lower volumes of things like oil or coal being shipped or processed at any one time. If an accident were to occur, chances are the amount contaminating the environment would be significantly lower than those seen in previous disasters.

In relation, clean up efforts would also be much faster and much cheaper. This aspect is appealing to both consumers and producers alike, not to mention taxpayers. Since the amount of fossil fuels involved in an accident would be relatively small due to weakened demand, clean up would be more manageable and require fewer volunteers along with fewer machines. This will additionally result in less ecological damage, saving not only the environment but also avoiding contamination of other industries like fishing, tourism or housing markets. So while you pay to insure your car, why not drive it a little less to save gas too?

Finding alternatives or improvements to fossil fuels as automobile has been a huge area of interest for researchers. A newly created form of uranium called uranium nitride has been created by scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. This new molecule could allow scientists to use the new molecule to make cars more fuel efficient or to create a small nuclear power plant that would fit into a car.

Uranium nitride performs a function that occurs in cars every day – the molecule removes the hydrogen atoms from the carbon atoms. When this happens in car engines, the energy that is created is typically lost. But with the uranium nitride molecule ripping of the hydrogen, the energy may actually be harnessed and gasoline may be used more effectively. This concept of improved efficacy can also be expanded to other products that are created with fossil fuels like plastics and medications.

With all this potential in the uranium nitride molecule, there is still one big problem. During the removal process, the uranium molecule destroys itself. This makes the process not commercially viable at this time; however, scientists are trying to determine how to make uranium nitride a more effective catalyst.

Along with the effects that uranium nitride may have on fossil fuels, uranium nitride may be able to be used in a small nuclear power plant that could fit into a car engine.  The risk of radiation is reduced with the new particle because it is created using depleted uranium which is not as dangerous. The new molecule may also be used in regular-sized nuclear reactors as a next generation fuel.

If uranium nitride can perform the carbon and hydrogen bond performance at room temperature and not get destroyed during the process, this new molecule could save companies and consumers money.

This month, the administration has approved an increase in the amount of ethanol used in fuel blends. However, this increase will be enforced only in new cars.

The Environmental Protection Agency will allow up to 15% ethanol to be added to gasoline which is more that the current 10%. This is part of the effort to reduce dependency on fossil fuels in the United States. However, 15% blends cannot be used in older vehicles so gas stations will have to label pumps clearly to ensure that consumers with older cars can avoid this gasoline. The new blend will be called E15 and should be used in cars built in 2007 or later. The blend cannot be used in cars and trucks built before 2001. The older vehicles may be at risk for damage if E15 is used in them. The engine, fuel line or catalytic converter may be damaged in older cars without upgrading of the system.

The EPA is still making a determination about the use of E15 in cars and trucks built between 2001 and 2006.

Consumer and business groups are opposing the ruling. The warranties for most cars cover the use of gasoline with up to 10% ethanol so using gasoline with higher amounts of ethanol could void these warranties. Refineries worry about the possible confusion of supplying an additional type of gasoline to gas stations. Ranchers are concerned about business costs because of the possible shift from growing corn for feed and towards ethanol production. Environmentalists are also concerned about the increased use of ethanol causing more land to be cleared.

Supporters feel that this ruling can improve the domestic economy and reduce independence on foreign fossil fuels.  Under federal law, the US will have to double the amount of alternative fuels available by the year 2022; this may be a step in that direction.

Many people this year are expecting a tax refund after they have filed. This can be a great way to help you make the move to going green. Buying a new car can be expensive, and buying one that is energy efficient, and considered better for the environment, can be even worse. The price of this can be greatly offset by using your income tax refund money.

When you are looking for a car that is “green,” you may start looking at different options. Do you want a hybrid? Or would you prefer a car that uses E85 gasoline? For 2010, the Union of Concerned Scientists awarded Honda Motor Company "Greenest Automaker" for the 5th consecutive year for efforts to lower carbon emissions.

Hyundai and Toyota were tried at second place but only by one point. Toyota was hampered by fewer efforts to lower carbon emissions.  Hyundai’s autos showed improved gas efficiency so the company’s rankings improved significantly; Hyundai also had the cleanest number of vehicles in the largest number of classes. For Honda to keep the title, the company must increase focus on hybrids and plug-in automobiles.  Chrysler ranked last among automobile makers in pollution creation for the fourth time; Ford and General Motors were close to last in this category as well.

Ford has been making improvements and working towards making the cars in their fleet greener and more efficient. Chevrolet has launched two new cars called the Volt and the Eco but needed to improve smog emissions from the entire fleet.  The average smog emissions from General Motors hybrids are worse than the combined average of the eight automobile makers. Volkswagen is planning to launch an entire fleet of hybrids and Nissan has plans to launch an electric car soon.

The rankings were based on average mile per-mile smog pollution and global warming emissions. The top eight automakers are Honda, Toyota, Ford, General Motors, Hyundai, Chrysler, Nissan and Volkswagen.

About one-third of all carbon emissions in the United States come from methods of transportation. One-sixth of smog production comes from passenger vehicles which is why the automakers are so important to improving the environment.

Climate change concerns have affected the wine industry. Grapes used for wines and champagnes do not ripen appropriately in excessive heat. The gradual elevations of temperature may change the industry and how it operates.

Any significant damage to the global wine industry could then affect the restaurant and tourism industries as well.  The erratic temperature and environment that may be in store for the world over the next 50 years may impact many industries but only the ski industry and the wine industry is as vulnerable to those changes in weather.

Many wine makers worldwide have noticed the problem but are not actively doing anything about it. Others are considering moving vineyards to more hospitable environments where the temperatures are more moderate. Some vineyards have moved to England where the climate is more temperate. In England, the government is also encouraging other adaptations like changing altitudes for growing grapes or pruning plants less which allows the grapes to have more shade.

In South Africa, the industry plans to attempt to decease its carbon footprint. It has created an initiative called Confronting Climate Change to better prepare for a future of carbon constraints and to determine ways to make these changes in the most efficient and least expensive way possible. Electricity use is a large part of the carbon footprint; transportation is the second highest because of the use of fossil fuels in a majority of these activities. Nitrogen-based fertilizers are also a common culprit as nitrous oxide contributes to global warming as well. One of the components of the initiative is a protocol standard and carbon calculator tool for industry members to use to determine the amount of carbon emissions used.

Other wine makers and countries will have to address climate change and the environment in order to continue to have a profitable and booming wine industry.

U.S. oil companies, Canadian pipelines companies and investors are spending a lot of money to open the next hydrocarbon frontier. Since the domestic supplies of fossil fuels is continually getting smaller, energy companies are turning to new sources located in reserves contained in the sands and shale of the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountain West and Canada.

Wyoming, Colorado and Utah contain enough shale to produce between 1.2 to 1.8 trillion barrels of oil; however, only one-half is recoverable. A region in Alberta Canada contains tar sands oil reserves estimated at 175 million barrels. Gas-bearing shale in the Great Plains, Great Lakes Northeast and Rocky Mountain West contains countless feet of natural gas. These reserves could power the United States for another 100 years.

However, mining for these unconventional energy sources can cause other problems for the environment.  There can be threats to waters supplies because of an increase amount of water needed to release these oil and gas containing shale and sands and an increase in CO2 emissions when compared to conventional drilling. It usually takes 4 times more water to produce one barrel of tar-sands oil; multiple numbers of large trucks carrying water must travel to these sometimes remote areas to provide the water for the extraction process.  Tar-sand oil creates three times as much carbon emissions as conventional drilling.

Some experts are concerned that exploring these options are sending the energy industry in the wrong direction by not spending resources on renewable energy sources. The oil industry feels that this exploration is improving national security; it is profitable for these companies as well. This drilling also has been creating an economic boom in these parts of the country but can be dangerous as well.

This practice will remain controversial and more investigation is ongoing.

Natural and organic, if nothing else, fossil fuels originate with the very earth we live upon. Materials that have graced our lands since the inception of our planet, these fuels can be as old as dirt, as some might say. To trace their exact origins is a scientific ambition that often leaves scientists confused. Composed of everything from hydrogen and carbon to liquids and animal remains, they have taken the form of methane, coal, petroleum and heating oil. Said to have collected under water and withstanding evolution from plant and animal remains to a pliable form that eventually transformed. This transformation, catagenesis, results in the fossil fuels existence as liquid- or gas-like.

Most widely considered the results of decomposed plant and animals as well as other organisms, fossil fuels serve as invaluable energy resources for practically applied aspects of our lives including the cars we drive and the homes in which we live. Depending on the refinement of the fuel, it can be used to run our cars and lubricate our engines. In addition, the heating oils give the rooms of our homes warmth so we may sleep soundly and enjoy the company of our loved ones within the walls of our houses and apartments.

The world at-large relies on fossil fuels for energy more than any other entity. Based on the statistics on our consumption of this energy, fossil fuels as a natural resource are both accessible and paramount to the functionality of the operations of our world.
Because of this reliance, the environment across the globe as been affected in an adverse way, due to the overuse of fossil fuel production. Initiatives are presently being promoted to ensure that we implement technological advances that are environment -friendly, to ensure that we don’t abuse nor run out of fossil fuels.

Smog and other evidence of air pollution derive from the abusive use of fossil fuels, originally the remains of plants and animals millions of years in our past. Levels of polluted entities have gravely risen due to the use of coal, gas, heating oil, and other fossil fuels to provide the energy required to make some of our habitual operations take place. When we drive our cars and heat our homes and businesses, we are contributing to the polluted nature of our cities, states, countries, and continents. When these fossil fuels are burned for travel in planes, trains, and automobiles, our skies are affected because the spheres above are filled with toxic materials that exist within the layers of our atmosphere.

These toxins have been blamed for a hot topic, known as global warming. This issue is very controversial because opinions vary on it’s significance and cause for alarm in present day, as well as what actions should be taken to prevent its advancement. Either way, global warming is discussed often as it pertains to Earth’s heating and what it means to our natural resources. Because fossil fuels are natural resources upon which our world relies to power many necessary aspects of our modern lives, the threat of carbon dioxide infiltrating both our earthly and atmospheric areas, makes the burning of fossil fuels disadvantageous to living an environmental-friendly existence.

Between acidic rain and global warming as well as the evidence of foggy cities across America, the use of fossil fuels can be seen to have both advantages and disadvantages but it’s debatable whether or not the former outweighs the latter. Another issue with the use of fossil fuels is the exponential increase in fossil fuel consumption since the last half of the twentieth century since it is not renewable and therefore these resources could disappear if we continue to overuse.

We can reduce carbon dioxide emission also through the way we travel, appliance usage, and changing our indoor lighting methods.

How and Why Conserving Fossil Fuel is Important

Natural gas, oil and coal are continuously being converted into energy. The United States Environmental Protection Agency and the Union of Concerned Scientist have given warnings that our growing energy need is more than our present supply of nonrenewable fossil fuels. There is currently a global effort by citizens and legislators to reduce the usage of our fossil fuel in order to avoid eventually running out.

One of our biggest energy consumers is in the area of transportation, and significant improvements would result to our environment if we would practice waking, biking or using public transportation in order to get around. According to some authorities in the area of transportation, if only one in ten people in our country used public transportation as a means of commuting, we would see a 40% reduction in our reliance on foreign oil. Some individuals may even take it upon themselves to get into shape by investing in some nike shoes.

At home or at the office, we can benefit from getting the same amount of light we are used to, but still keep over 1,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, by just replacing all of our incandescent, 75-watt bulbs with a 20-watt fluorescent compact light. Another area where we can save on fossil fuels is if we place our thermostats three degrees warmer in the summer months which will help save an average of 470 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Our world runs on energy and most of this energy is provided by natural resources. We don’t even realize all the activities that we participated in everyday that is powered by the renewable energy originating from fossil fuels and the materials they evolve into. Fossil fuels are animal and plant remains that go through a hefty transformation that eventually allows us to be warm in our homes and offices, drive our cars, and take the trips to foreign locales that we call vacations.

The environment in which we live is unfortunately affected by the burning of these fuels as the production of oil, gas, and coal release toxins into our atmosphere causing irreparable damage. Debates have been long engaged in that discuss the direct effects of our overuse of fossil fuels to indulge in our customary way of life across the globe. The need for technological advances in environmentally-friendly fuel production has been a hot topic for a number of years.

We are taking seriously the idea that our resources are depleting and large corporation across the world are making initiatives to be conscious of this rapidly increasing depletions. But the average person who cares enough to read an article or take part in organized efforts to save our earth often don’t know how. However, we all have heard that most things in life should be used in moderation and this mantra is most applicable when it comes to fossil fuel consumption and usage.

We need to take responsibility for contributing to the overuse of fossil fuels. The truth is, we can protect our homes and businesses to maximize the effects of the heating conditions and operations that we pay for. It will no longer reduce our own bills, but disallow the release of heat and warmth that is generated by the burning of these fossil fuels. We can take part in the regulation of heat within the parameters of our control at home and even at work more than we think we can. Our earth is responsible for more of the practical aspects of our lives, as we know it, than we are even aware of. We make our way through our days and feel inconvenienced when we are not comfortable in our modes of transportation or in how we feel while we sleep. These issues can be attributed to the use of fossil fuels. Demonstrative of the resources that we take for granted, heating oil and gas are utilized and both exported and imported throughout the world to ensure our productivity. When we think about the evolution of our world, we often overlook the antiquity of our predecessors.

Fossil fuels evolved from the depth of materialization. The plant and animal remains went through a process of catagenesis, that resulted in the fossil fuels being liquidized and becoming gaseous. In our modern world, we are nothing without the effects brought about by this process.  They withstood undesirable conditions to develop into the very resources we need to live our lives. The decomposition of the original materials that resulted in coal, petroleum and other resources we use on a daily basis to make our world run with power and energy allow us to conduct our live effectively. They contribute to the overall productivity related to political and economic growth and competition.

We consume a large amount of fossil fuel production and this has alienated the environmental initiatives that seek to better our lives and those of future generations. We function solely on the idea that our resources will be an endless entity and yet they deplete by the day and we engage in a cyclical pattern of using and re-using with unjustified expectations that the resources will be there tomorrow. The trajectory of our actions may point to a world in which we have little to rely on to go about our business effectively.

We won’t all work for Green Peace, nor are we approached on the city streets by a woman who looks us in the eye as we are about to walk past her and says, "Let’s talk about the environment." We all want to help because this is truly our environment and even if we don’t care about our own demise, we have an inherent capacity for caring about the generations ahead of us who will deal with our mistakes. But often we don’t take the time to realize the effects of our own actions on the environment in which we live.

If you grew up in the 1980s, the idea was to stay away from hairspray because it released toxins into the sky above and had a direct causal effect on smog and other evidence of our atmosphere becoming dirty. But there are a number of issues involved in trying to protect our environment. We are all affected by the consequences of our collective participation in fossil fuel usage. We don’t all drive the most friendly cars when it comes to conservation. We don’t all ride our bikes to work instead of driving or taking the train. The truth is, we all care but we don’t all have the monetary and practical resources and information to adapt our unique habitual living limitations to the conservation of our Earth’s resources.

Most of us find our fellow human beings as worthy of clean air and warmth as the next person, but we don’t have the tools to contribute holistically to the cause of preserving the fossil fuel consumption and its usage. We need to realize the power of the collective and begin with awareness that the power we use to energize our lives also takes away from the arsenal of energy for the world at-large, not only presently but in the future.

Generating the energy we expect on a daily basis for our transportational needs as well as heating needs, has been taken for granted. We get in our cars and notice that the fuel light is low and yet we rely on the local gas station to provide us with the fuel we need to get us from here to there. We also complain if ow homes are too cold to sleep in as well as expect to walk into our places of business with the high expectation that we will be accommodated with warmth.

These privileged conditions are provided by the fossil fuel process that began with the remains of animals and plants that eventually undertook an evolutionary pattern that involved the passage of one phase to another. These phases created our modernly accepted concept of fuel as a renewable resource and yet they can be exhausted once the overuse has been established. There is nothing wrong with going about our days with the expectation that our resources will be there to assist us, but the error is in our expectation that our participation in the resources’ depletion  should be overlooked, especially in modern times.

A lot of people believe that money is nothing more than a bunch of inert matter, kept in safes and pockets. And, while this is true of some money, the coins and bills that make up that amount belie a much larger amount, which is far different. When you consider that less than a quarter of the world’s money is actually represented by something physical, you may start to wonder whether there is not something deeper than that.

Many people believe that thoughts are things, after all. And even the most hard-headed realist will consent that how you individually interpret something can have a great impact on how it “really is.” For instance, consider a payday loan. Is it a chance to reclaim your financial stability after an unexpected setback? Or is it nothing more than a way for opportunists to take advantage of the less fortunate?

So, is wealth really some kind of energy? Isn’t that just hocus pocus and new-age silliness? What would you think if someone told you that it might be possible to find perpetual sources of new energy, if our desire to find it was only strong enough? Would you think this person was insane and completely disregard the ideas? Or would you consider that maybe the individual was simply looking at things in a different way?

The pursuit of wealth taps into the basic desire of all life forms. Simply put, every living thing desires to have more of something. Whether it be more health, more strength, more freedom, or something else entirely, wealth allows us to quantify and use this desire to its fullest. While you may be limited in how much strength you can have in your body, there is no limit to your wealth. One could very reasonably say the real power that wealth provides to motivate people is the ultimate source of its energetic potential.

There are pictures in almost every media outlet that showcase the severity of air pollution. Pictures show the massive levels of smog in large urban areas and pictures of massive dark clouds that cover the sky. It may be hard to believe but the world did not always contain these types of images. There was a time when even the largest cities had bright blue skies and people could enjoy nature the way it was intended; with crystal blue skies and white puffy clouds. What could cause this type of change?

The change that occurred was the use of fossil fuels. The blue skies and white clouds existed in a time when people mainly traveled through a more natural means of transportation such as horse and buggy or horseback riding. These types of transportation had very little impact on the pollution levels. Over the years this natural form of transportation began to experience a massive decrease in use due to more favorable forms of modern transportation. It is this type of transportation that leads to higher pollution levels.

Modern forms of transportation includes the use of trains, planes and cars. In order to run properly these types of transportation use some form of fossil fuels to run. Some run on the burning of oil, while others might run off of the burning of coal. No matter what form of fossil fuels are being used to power the form of transportation, there is still some form of burning the fossil fuel. When the fossil fuel is burned off, chemicals and toxins are released into the atmosphere and end up creating those dark, dusty clouds that we see in pictures on the news.

While many people may wish for bluer skies and less pollution; it is our reliance upon fossil fuels that have caused what once was a reality to be a distant dream. Until our reliance on fossil fuels decreases, we will still have images of smog filled cities and dirty cloud filled skies.

Environmental issues are a “hot topic” amongst many people. It seems that almost every company, business or area of our daily lives has some environmental issue being pushed. There is pressure to go green by recycling, walking and using less plastic bags. When we go to get that cup of coffee we are reminded that we could save some money if we brought our own cup. While we as consumers can only do so much; one of the only ways that environmental issues will ever be solved is through the many great students that study the environment.

Environmental studies have become more and more popular on college campuses. Over 20 years ago, there were very few courses and classes devoted to studying environmental issues and thinking of ways to solve the problems that are plaguing our world. Now there are degrees and whole college programs devoted to finding a solution to environmental issues.

It is through these classes, programs and research that is prompted by these lessons that the solution to environmental issues will be found. In order to find a solution to a problem, you must first admit there is a problem. By not having anyone devoting any time to studying these issues, a solution will never be found. Now that whole college classes are being devoted to teaching and letting students explore environmental issues, a possible solution could be discovered for all the problems that the environment is facing.

College students are some of the smartest, most aspiring problem solvers the world has. By having college classes that present environmental issues and allows them to explore possible solutions or ways to help the environment; students might just be able to come up with a solution to the problem. Environmental studies allow students to have just that outlet to help change the world. You never know the next freshmen college student might just be able to solve global warming or some other huge environmental issue!

Science classes cover a wide range of every day topics that can come in handy later on in life. One of those types of topics includes biology. Studying the human body can be very helpful and come in handy down the line. As humans we should have a better understanding of how our bodies work and what is going on inside. That way when we get sick or something happens we have a slight understanding of the body we live in. Global warming is the belief that the Earth’s core temperature is heating up over the years. How is the electricity produced?

Fossil fuels are responsible for the electricity that is produced. Fossil fuels are essentially substances such as oil, coal and gas that are created from organic materials such as plant and animal life. It takes many many years for these types of substances to form. In fact, some of the substances are created from pre-historic materials that date back a million years. These fossil fuels are located deep below the layers of the earth and through the use of drills and coal mines the substances are able to be extracted from the earth.

Once the fossil fuels are extracted from the earth they are taken to the power plant. It is at the power plant that these substances are then burned, combined or used to create the electricity that is used to run the electronics. After the electricity is created it is then sent through wires from the power plant to your home; where it is used to power your electronics.

While the process to create electricity is a lot more complicated then described. This gives you a brief look at where your electricity comes from and how it is produced.

Businesses need money. It’s just the way that a business runs. A business can have the most wonderful, innovative idea in the whole world but without money to back the running of the business that idea and business will never be able to get off the floor. Even if the business has a financial backing from another source; sometimes the best source of income for a business could be to venture into the various investment opportunities that are available to businesses.

The ability for a business to invest money into a company or to help financially back a company is a popular practice when it comes to business finance practices. A company looking to invest in another company will commonly look for a company that supplies materials or products that are an essential part of the original business.

Cavemen. We credit them with having invented the wheel, drawing pictures on cave walls and even developing some of our modern habits and instincts that humans have today. These cavemen did all these amazing accomplishments without the dependence upon fossil fuels. They didn’t use coals, oils and other non-renewable substances that are known as fossil fuels. They relied upon a simpler lifestyle. Little did they know that the discovery of fossil fuel would change their life.

Life was simpler back in the caveman’s time. There were no cars, heating elements, electricity and other modern elements that depend upon fossil fuels to make them run or operate. These pre-historic people relied upon simple devices to help them survive. For example, instead of heating a cave with heaters; they used wood, fire and cloth to enclose the area. There was no need for fossil fuels. The thought to look for something that produced more energy just wasn’t there for the cavemen.

Fossil fuels are created by deposits that are buried deep into the earth. During the cavemen years there wasn’t the means or ability to drill, dig or mine into the earth to reach these elements. Even though the substances that are used to create fossil fuels were right under their feet, cavemen couldn’t know about it, even if they had the desire to look for it because they didn’t have the ability to access the substances so deep below the earth’s surface.

Once humans discovered fossil fuel substances, through drills, digging and mining and realized the potential that it held; the world changed. Cavemen lived in simple times and fossil fuels changed that. Soon locomotives would be built and run off of coal, airplanes would run off of oil and electricity would require the use of burning oil. The world quickly became reliant upon the use of fossil fuels and the energy that they created and surviving in the world become a little more complicated. No longer could humans just live inside an enclosed cave with some wood and fire. The world changed and the cavemen moved into a modern era.

Oil is derived from crude oil which is comprised of hydrocarbons, nitrogen, oxygen and some sulfur impurities. A single barrel of oil translates to approximately 42 United States gallons and is capable of providing as much as 63 percent of Btu. There are crude oil reserves all over the world, but as much as 63 percent of all known reserves are found in the Middle East alone. Of all of the oil that is consumed within the United States, most of it is used specifically for transportation, though it is also used for commercial, industrial and residential purposes.

Crude oil is used for many different purposes, including for the production of a range of different fuels. Crude oil is also used for petrochemical ingredients that go into the creation of inks, plastics, tires and other products, including personal care products and pharmaceutical products.

Oil is typically recovered by way of drilling wells into non-porous rocks which form a barrier, trapping the toil inside. Approximately 30 percent of all the oil trapped inside is capable of being recovered economically by way of pumping. Then there is a secondary form of recovery that is capable of removing another 10 percent of oil. The way that this is achieved is by flooding the oil well using a high-pressure stream of gas or water. Sometimes there are also tertiary methods of recovering oil from rock. By heating the oil, an additional 10 percent of it can be scrubbed out as well. Unfortunately, about half of the total amount of oil is left behind because it is trapped in the rock. Luckily, oil producers are constantly working to find new and economical methods for recovering the trapped oil.

Oil is just one of the numerous fossil fuels that we rely on daily. Fossil fuels have a hold on us because we rely on them for so many different purposes. As time goes on, it seems that our need for oil and other fossil fuels is growing, even though our supply of these fossil fuels is shrinking. Will we eventually run out of fossil fuels?

What do you know about coal and its uses as a fossil fuel, and what type of impact it has on our environment? You may know that we use coal for a variety of different purposes, including the creation of electricity, but at what cost to our planet?

Coal is derived from plants that lived and died millions of years ago. It is the largest contributor to the increasing carbon dioxide percentage in the area. There are a number of toxic by-products involved in the coal refining and combustion process, including uranium, mercury, thorium and arsenic along with other types of heavy metal. Between seven and 30 percent of all coal contains non-combustible materials that must eventually be disposed of.

Lower-emissions coal is something that can be created, but it takes as much as 20 percent additional coal in order to create this cleaner-burning coal. This coal is not simply going to appear, but rather will have to be mined and this is a destructive process from an environmental standpoint. Additionally, the practice of mining coal itself is intensive in terms of carbon emissions, meaning that creating cleaner-burning coal actually contributes to more carbon emissions and environmental destruction rather than less.

Every person living in the United States uses approximately 3.8 tons worth of coal every year. Coal is responsible for providing approximately 23 percent of our global energy needs, and is responsible for generating approximately 39 percent of the electricity used around the globe. Coal is also necessary for global steel production, and approximately 70 percent of steel production depends on the use of coal.

The carbon dioxide emissions that come from the generation of coal-fired electricity in the United States are much greater than all of the emissions from America’s cars and trucks. Most average coal plants require the use of 14,600 railroad cars in order to provide 1.4 million tons worth of coal in a single year. A typical coal-fired, 500-megawatt power plant will draw in approximately 2.2 billion gallons worth of water every year, taking it from rivers, lakes, oceans and other nearby bodies of water.

One of the biggest problems involving fossil fuels like crude oil is that we take for granted where they come from, and the impact that they actually have on our earth. Using fossil fuels is something that we do on a daily basis, but at what cost? It is important that people learn to grasp the true nature of fossil fuels, their creation and their use so that we can make smarter decisions about the way we use them in the future.

Oil, a fossil fuel, is not derived from the fossils that you may expect. The creatures that give us oil are diatoms, single celled organisms that can be as old as 650 million years. A single liter of gasoline results from approximately 20 metric tonnes of organic material that was previously deposited on the floor of the ocean. Crude oil is used for much more than fuel, as it is also the basis for many chemicals and plastics, some of which are used in personal care products like commercial shampoos.

The consumption of oil in North America equals approximately 3 gallons in a day per capita, which is significantly more than most other countries. Oil is becoming more difficult to easily access, and as a result, many other resources have to be tapped into. This includes the tar sands in Canada. In order to create a single barrel of crude oil sourced from the tar sands, between 2-4 barrels of water are required.

A single gallon worth of motor oil can easily contaminate as many as a million gallons of clean water. A single quart worth of motor oil can contribute to an oil slick that is two acres large. Through history, crude oil has been involved in a number of oil spills, contaminating our water. In the oil spill involving Exxon Valdez, 11 million gallons were spilled. This is 257,000 barrels, or roughly 38,800 metric tonnes. More than 1300 miles worth of coastline were impacted, and many animals were killed. The death toll included fish eggs, killer whales, bald eagles, harbor seals, sea birds and sea otters.

Wind energy is one of the most sustainable forms of energy available and yet many countries are vastly underutilizing it. Despite its availability, studies have shown that the potential for wind energy is more than 40 times greater than current global consumption. So with so much available why don’t we harness it frequently?

Large wind turbine farms are becoming more and more evident as grants are given out by countries and governments to reduce their dependence on fossil fuels. A wind turbine has a large propeller on it which is turned by the wind which then turns an electrical generator. These generators produce energy that is then stored in giant battery-like devices. Wind turbines are huge and the farms take up enormous tracts of land. There also needs to be a fairly constant source of at least 15-mile-per-hour winds. An argument exists that wind farms are taking away land that is either in use for agriculture or crops.

In addition, wind farms are expensive to erect and maintain. Most countries already have some sort of fossil fuel process in place whereby they either produce it or have the infrastructure in place to receive it. Utilizing a new technology, such as wind power, comes with an additional price tag that some countries just can’t manage.

Nonetheless it is confusing why countries such as China would choose to continue to construct coal burning plants when a cleaner, more sustainable form of energy could be harnessed. Like a Wall Street Journal subscription, wind energy will just keep giving and giving.

Wind energy continues to be used with great success in many countries and more wind farms are being built all the time. Hopefully other countries will follow suit and choose a renewable and clean form of energy over fossil fuels in an effort to reduce the harm we’re causing our planet.

Coal is regarded as an abundant type of fossil fuel resource and it consists primarily of carbon. The energy content of coal, in terms of Btu per pound can range between 5000 and 15000 depending on what type of coal you are relying on. There are coal reserves located all throughout the globe. Approximately 87 percent of all produced coal is consumed by our electric utilities. In the United States alone, half of all of the energy that is produced is done so with the help of coal.

Coal also happens to be used as a very basic energy source for a variety of different industries, and is also used as a fuel for heating. The United States is one of the biggest coal exporters in the entire world. Most of the coal exported away from the United States is transferred into Canada, Japan and Western Europe.

Coal is removed from the earth by way of deep mining or surface mining. Surface mining is also known as strip mining, and it is a less expensive form of mining that typically occurs above ground on flat land. On the other hand, deep mining requires the creation of deep tunnels and shafts to gain access to the coal. There has been some automation when it comes to deep mining, and this has helped in countering some of the health hazards and safety hazards that are inherent with this type of coal mining.

Coal is capable of being gasified in order to form a type of synthetic fuel that is similar to natural gas fuels. It is also capable of being made into a liquid for the creation of a synthetic crude oil. So far it has not been an economical proposition to create synthetic fuels out of coal, at least not on a large scale. However, as people continue to work on making these processes more efficient in general, it may become a more economical proposition to use synthetic fuels derived from coal in the future. This may also depend on how safe we can make mining for coal in the future.

The process involved in oil refining separates the crude oil into various hydrocarbons while removing impurities, which can include heavy metals, nitrogen and sulfur. The first step in the process is a fractional distillation which relies on the different boiling points for the various hydrocarbons. A fractionating column is used, a tower in which the crude oil is heated until its boiling point. Then horizontal trays divide up the column at different points, collecting the hydrocarbons at their boiling points. As the oil continues to boil, it begins to vaporize. Each of the hydrocarbons rises to a specific tray just below its boiling point. There it is allowed to cool, turning it back into a liquid again.

Lighter fractions are propane, butane and other liquefied petroleum-based gases as well as petrochemicals which are used for the creation of consumer products like fabrics and plastics. Gasoline, diesel fuel and kerosene come next. There are also heavier fractions that are used for the creation of home heating oil and the fuels that factories and ships use. There are fractions that are even heavier still, most of which go into the creation of waxes and lubricants.

At this point the crude oil refining process continues, converting the heavier fractions into the lighter fractions. Cracking processes are often used in order to transform the heavier hydrocarbon molecules, making them smaller so that they can be used for things like jet fuel and gasoline. Thanks to improvements in refining technologies, more than 21 gallons of regular gasoline can be created using a single 42 gallon barrel worth of crude oil, which is a serious improvement over refining technologies of the past. In the past the same barrel of crude oil would only produce approximately 11 gallons worth of gasoline.

Oil shale was never capable of making crude oil because it was not heated enough or buried deep enough. The hydrogen content that it has is somewhere between crude oil and coal. While there is 1000 times more oil shale than crude oil, it is not economical or practical to extract the energy from oil shale.

Natural gas can be looked at as the gas component for both oil and coal formation. Natural gas is used for a variety of different purposes including commercial heating, cooking and in order to fuel electricity generation. Natural gas is also available in a compressed form, allowing it to be used as fuel for transportation. Natural gas can be both found mixed within crude oil or released during the refining process for coal. 6,000 cubic feet worth of natural gas is considered to be equivalent to a single barrel worth of oil.

The world reserves for natural gas are at their greatest in Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates and in the United States. In the United States alone, in 1999, more than 19.7 million cubic feet worth of natural gas were consumed, and nearly all of them were sourced from domestic production. There are five states in the United States that hold at least 85 percent of the natural gas reserves in the US, and these are Oklahoma, New Mexico, Alaska, Texas and Louisiana.

Most wells used to harvest natural gas are drilled directly into underground reservoirs. When the natural gas is removed from the reservoir, it can be stored underground in caverns until the point where it is needed, or it can be transferred to the processing station where components can be removed. Some of the components that are removed include carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and sulfur. Natural gases are typically transported by way of pipelines, though they are also capable of being liquefied, at which point they are shipped to other countries. The process involved is typically expensive and complex.

Natural gas electrical generation has been significantly improved thanks to the development of what are known as combined-cycle systems. The purpose of these systems is to combine combustion turbines fueled by natural gas with heat-recovery steam turbines and steam generators in order to produce electricity using two methods rather than just one. Roughly 60% of heat created this way can be harnessed for the generation of electricity, leading to a better, energy-efficient production.

Over 30 years ago fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal only made up about 75% of the world’s source of energy. A current look into how much fossil fuel the world uses has estimated that it is over 90% of the world’s energy source. That is a major increase in the amount of fossil fuels that we use and depend on.

Why is the amount of fossil fuels usage so high?

Fossil fuels power almost everything in our daily lives. The cars and trucks we drive run on gas. The electronics and power that we use at home comes from the burning of oil to produce energy. There are very few elements of our daily lives that do not rely upon fossil fuels in some way. Even the food we eat relies upon fossil fuels because they were delivered to the store via a truck or car.

Over the years our dependence upon oil, gas or coal has become more and more severe. People are relying more and more upon cars to get around and our lives are becoming more dependent upon electronics, the Internet and other electronic means. Without fossil fuels we would be lost and our daily lives would be disrupted.

Seeing the numbers and the amount of dependence the world has upon fossil fuels, it can be hard to deny that we as humans are dependent on fossil fuels.

Turn on any 24 hour news channel or open up the newspaper and you’re sure to find a number of articles, editorial comments and information on some of the proposed government regulations on companies that burn fossil fuels and even on any object that burns fossil fuels. The question that comes to mind is why would the government want to step in and regulate the burning of fossil fuels?

Many scientists and research studies have suggested that the burning of fossil fuels are what is causing the massive changes in temperature and global warming. As the world becomes more and more dependent upon fossil fuels and more forms of transportation use fossil fuels to run on; the world is being effected slowly by these massive burning of fossil fuels. Besides the effect that global warming is having on the plant, there is also the increase in incidents where acid rain has destroyed forests and plant and animal life are being effected by the change in weather patterns.

Since the burning of fossil fuels has so many proposed negative side effects, the government believes that by stepping in and regulating the burning of fossil fuels then the negative side effects can be diminished greatly. Some proposed changes include trying to use other less harmful substances that release less toxins in the area. Other changes to the burning of fossil fuels include only burning off these substances for a certain length of time. Instead of running a plant for 24 hours a day, a plant can only operate a maximum amount of time to offset what they are releasing into the environment.

There are always people who are for and against any proposed change. That that believe that these types of regulations can help believe that these regulations will reduce carbon dioxide that is released into the environment and reverse some of the effects that the massive burnings have caused. Those against these regulations believe that it’s just another way for government to step into another area of our lives.

Only time will truly tell if these regulations will help the environment.

The first problem is that these fossil fuels do not recreate quickly. It takes millions of years for fossil fuels to come back. We are using far more than is being put back in and even if it was being put back in, it wouldn’t be seen in our lifetime or any not so distant generations.

The second problem is that when we burn fossil fuels they release carbon dioxide which is put into the earth’s atmosphere. This is not normally a problem because the earth takes in and absorbs the carbon dioxide, however, we are using so much that the earth can’t regulate the amount we are putting into the air and this means the rest is released into the ozone and contributes to the hole in the ozone layer. This is said to be the primary issue of global warming. One thing is clear: this issue is not going away.

Acid Rain. People have heard of it but aren’t really sure what it is. While this term has probably come up many years ago in your third grade social studies or earth science class; it probably didn’t stay with you. Even though you might not remember what acid rain is or why it is a problem; it still is very much a problem that is plaguing our environment. Here is a look at this environmental phenomenon.

Acid rain is a scientific definition for when a type of percipitation, usually rain, is acidic. Normally when it rains, the rain drops are a watery substance and have a low acidic level. In the case of acidic rain the rain drops are almost like dripping acid from the sky.

This type of rain can cause a lot of damage to the environment. Acid rain can destroy trees, land and bushes. It can even wreck havoc all over a forest and leave virtually no trees or wooded area. Animals that live in these types of environments can also be harmed. Their fur can be damaged by the acid rain drops or they can suffer severe acid burns when the rain falls on them.

Seeing how damaging acid rain can be it makes people wonder what could be the possible cause of this type of weather?

Acid rain is produced by gases that are produced when companies and plants burn fossil fuels. When the fuels are burned toxins are released into the air and collect in the clouds. The mixture of water and toxins results in the acidic rain drops that fall to the ground.

Acid rain may have been a part of your third grade science lesson but it is a very real issue. Acid rain is happening a lot less often due to government regulations on burning fossil fuels, yet it still occurs occasionally.

Scientists believe that when the ice caps melt slowly it causes the world’s temperature to rise a bit; which causes higher temperatures around the globe. Less rain in the rain forests leads to decreased animal population and even a low amount of plants and trees that are important to our daily living.

So how are fossil fuels to blame for this weather pattern change?

Many studies have suggested that the cause of global warming stems from our dependence upon fossil fuels. In the decades that the Earth’s temperature has begun to rise, the world has become more and more dependent upon fossil fuels such as oils, coal and gas. When these fossil fuels are burned off it creates carbon dioxide as a by product. This carbon dioxide is believed to cause the global warming that raises the Earth’s temperature and creates odd weather patterns.

When there is talk about such issues as global warming and the general state of the environment you probably hear the words ‘fossil fuels’ quite often. Chances are you have learned about fossil fuels in school but it’s been a while and perhaps you have forgotten.

Fossil fuels are fueled formed by natural resources like anaerobic decomposition and buried dead organism. It takes millions of years for fossil fuels to form. The problem is the cost to overhaul a business with alternative power can be very costly and it is a money equation.

The other issue is that fossil fuels produce 21.3 billion tons of carbon dioxide per year but the earth can only absorb half that amount. There is a range of organic, hydrocarbon, and compounds in any given fuel mixture. The mixture of hydrocarbons is what gives the fuel its properties. Fossil fuels are really important because they can be burned and produce significant amounts of energy. Fossil fuels are so important to the world and also so dangerous to it as well.

For example, you may want to buy a hybrid or electric car, but you can’t afford to right now. That doesn’t mean there isn’t anything you can do. Start saving money, look for ways to cut down on what you’re spending right now and get a refinance car loan so your payments are lower and you’re handing over less interest over time. We know that the sun is one of the most powerful sources of energy in the universe. Farmers have been aware of it’s immense power and effect on their crops for centuries. As technology advances farmers have done what they can to use solar energy as a way to increase production as well as use it as an alternative fuel and energy source by the rest of the world. But what about using sun in its most base methods. For instance light can simply be used to light a house. The complete history of lighting is based off the idea of natural light. While things have changed since the Romans used lighting in the 6th century they are still using daylighting and solar lighting as ways to not only give a place an added beauty but also as a way to reduce the amount of fossil fuels that are being burned to create energy.

The systems of daylighting are that which collect sunlight and provide them to the inside of a room. They use ethanol and sugar cane and the can waste is used to process head and power. Most of the filling stations in the country of Brazil have an ethanol pump or two. The is no way to be sure that we will use the alternative energy we have now but it’s something that most businesses and homes are considering.

There is a clear debate about whether or not the human way of life is polluting the earth. There are studies on both sides to enforce their point and there are studies on both sides to dispute the opposing argument. While it’s difficult to be on one side or the other, there is one thing that is certain: most American’s are confused by the whole thing. Thermal mass is any material that is used to store heat and that heat from the sun is the case in solar energy. Thermal mass includes stone, cement and water. These thermal mass principles are used in thermal mass have been used in arid climates and warm temperature places to keep building cool by absorbing all the solar energy and radiating stored heat at night. They can be used in cold temperature areas to maintain warmth as well. Thermal mass depends on several factors like climate, daylighting and shading conditions. The fact of the matter is that conditions used for cooling and heating are helped by the use of solar energy and have been for years. And with the way technology is advancing, solar energy is going to get stronger by the year.

And so does everybody else. Coal, natural gas, gasoline, and diesel fuel all come the same place; organic lifeforms that died hundreds of millions of years ago, hence the name “fossil fuels.” Diesel and gasoline come from creatures that lived back then, while fuels like methane gas and coal are results of plant life that has decomposed.

In the United States it was found that the use of fossil fuels is responsible for ninety percent of greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gases are the ones that burn holes in the ozone and damage the environment. Keeping in mind that it is widely accepted that a change in global weather killed the dinosaurs, there’s a sense of righteous irony that the giant lizards are striking back. Nevertheless, various measures are being taken to move away from the use of fossil fuels, and explore other fuel sources that will be less volatile towards the natural world. Even the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) presented a case focusing on how national security could be improved by moving away from fossil fuels.

Fossil fuels are what becomes of just the organic material of an organism. Museums of dinosaur bones show how the skeletons are left behind for some time before they too decompose. Dinosaur bones continue to catch and hold the awe of humans, and the search for them was redoubled during the dinosaur renaissance in the 1970s. In 2002, a group of home-schoolers took a working field trip to a site where their teachers had purchased the fossil rights from the property managers. They found the most preserved skeleton of an Allosaurus ever found on the earth.

Luckily for mankind, and despite worries to the contrary, there are plenty of fossil fuels to go around. The world is not going to run out of them anytime soon.

So we know that government is very big on turning over to alternative fuels like solar energy or wind energy but how is that possible in this day and age? How can we use the immense power of the sun to make our lives better?
The first thing we must make sure that the term solar radiation is used it doesn’t only refer to the energy used from the sun but actually all renewable energies get their energy from the sun. The only ones that don’t are geothermal or tidal. So how is it used in today’s world?

It’s used in urban planning a lot. Sunlight has been a big part of building design since the beginning of history. Solar architecture and urban have been around for centuries as emperors used to orient their building south to be more toward the sunlight and warmth. This is a common feature of passive solar architecture and thermal mass. These features are tailored to the local climate and environment and produce well lit spaces that will end up staying in a comfortable temperature area. Recently solar design was used to tie together solar light and heating within an integrated solar design package. There are accessories that can enhance and compliment passive design.

There are also such things as urban heat islands that are in metro area and they contain high temps than the surrounding environment. The higher temps are a result of high absorption of the light and materials such as concrete and contain more head. These things are not simply accidents but rather planned out happenings that make a certain part of the city warmer and thus decreasing it’s need on regular electricity. These advancement are a big boon to the way the world is needed to rely on the electricity we currently use. Solar energy and solar power in general are becoming a more widely used source of alternative fuel. As the world begins to figure out that we are under using the sun there will be more solar power in the world as we know it.

Perhaps you’ve heard about global warming. If you watch the news you must have seen this topic but what is really going on with global warming? Are they just talking about the temperature? The fact is that global warming has to do with the increase in the average temperature of the earths near surface air and the oceans. It has more to do with where it is projected to go than where it has already been. They say that the temperature in this century will increase by 1 degrees. Now this might not seem like a lot but the effects, according to experts could be unbelievable. The warmer it and the warmer the temperature goes of the oceans the more likely it is that the polar ice caps could melt.

Why is this? Because the freezing temperature of is 32 degrees if the average temperature dips above that there will be nothing to keep them frozen. Melting them could have huge implications to widespread flooding and other damages. They can’t say for certain how much everything arises because the different equipment they use has a different sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations and the different estimates in future greenhouse gas emissions. But if the sea levels rise it will change the pattern of precipitation and including expansion. This will change the intensity of bad weather and cause species of animals and mammals to be extinct. Now the warming they expect will change depending on the region in question but one thing can be certain, that is that ocean acidification is going to happen contaminating the ocean for all people.

Scientists believe that global warming is in fact real but there are those that don’t believe so. This debate is raging in congress and in the classroom. There are those that believe that just because of a small temperature increase doesn’t mean the environment is in any danger. It’s impossible to know for sure and only time will tell if they are right or wrong.

The next time you look up at the sun you might have to look at it in a very different way. You know that the sun is there to help the plants grow and it’s there to provide warmth in your home as well as it can do wonders for your mental state of mind but what you might not know is that the sun has been making your life better in ways you might never have imagined and it’s these ways that make the sun exactly what it is today.

Would you believe me if I told you the process of distilled water can be made with the help of the sun? Solar distillation is used for saline solution and brackish water portable. 1872 was the first time a solar distillation project was done on a massive scale. The way it works is it involves water filled plastic bottles to sunlight for several hours. It will take anywhere from either six hours to 48 hours. The 48 hours would be if it were fully overcast conditions. This is the popular method for water distilling in third world countries who don’t have the money for purification plants. Sometimes solar energy than may be used in stailisation ponds to help out waste water without chemicals. Further environmental advantage to this method is these ponds consume carbon dioxide in photosynthesis.

The sun can also be used for cooking. It can also be used for drying and some of the pasteurization. There are three sections for it. There is box cookers, panel cookers and reflector cookers. The simplest one is that of the box cooker. It has a container that is insulated with a lid. It can be used effectively with overcast skies and reach 150 C. Panel cookers have a light that reflects to direct sunlight and reaches the same temps that a box cooker would. Reflector cookers could reach up to 315 C but are dependent on direct light to function. These are just more ways that solar energy is used today.
